Flamenco – two studies

Acrylic on canvas board. Just fancied something different. Also, I very rarely paint figures but I'm currently in the mood (love Glenn Miller!) so am striking while the inclination is hot. Really enjoyed painting this. Normally I like my images to be 'clean' but I wanted to capture movement and to do that there needs to be an energy about the image which you can't get if you don't paint more freely. A good exercise. Acrylic on acrylic paper. I had fun painting this as it's ...

Sleeping Beasties

I could have called it 'Sleeping Beauties' but one letter makes all the difference..! Pencil crayon on pastel paper. I don't like using pastels, they are messy and make my teeth stand on end, but I love the texture of good quality pastel paper and it's fine for using with pencil crayon. This was done for the May 2020 art group challenge on the theme of 'At Home' - and that was decided WAY before Coronavirus imprisoned everyone! I did think about doing an underwhelming still-life of t...

Fairy-tale Creatures

Watercolour. This was for our local art group monthly challenge on the theme of 'Fairy-tale Creatures'. Actually quite hard to think of creatures from fairy-tales and I'm being really pendantic here. First of all, I am excluding all fantasy tales and absolutely NOT including fine works such as The Lord of the Rings which is in a class of it's own. Fairy-tales are stories like Cinderella, Beauty and the Beast, anything including in those compilations by Ruth Manning-Sanders and so on, ...

Escape

Acrylic on A3 acrylic paper. Fourth in my series of lyric paintings, this time for yet another gorgeous song by Kongos. For anyone interested, here's the nerdy stuff: apart from the obvious references in the picture (there's a requirement there for you to listen to the lyrics if you have no idea what this picture is about), I am well aware this song is on Lunatic, however the bubble image (from the 1929 Pt 1 cover) represents that beautiful moment in the song just before the chorus where ...

Stranger In A Strange Land

Acrylic on acrylic paper. Another lyric painting - this time for that excellent track by Iron Maiden which I believe was inspired by the book of the same name by Robert A Heinlein. Must confess I haven't read it but I love the song and enjoyed doing this painting.

Winter Landscape

Winter Landscape - Watercolour (34cm x 24cm) Art group monthly challenge theme for February. Currently doing a snow and ice themed painting in acrylic for Stranger In A Strange Land (see 'News') so I thought I'd do this one in watercolour which lends itself to this concept and also makes a nice change. Bit of fantasy fun.

Song Illustration – Repeat After Me (Kongos)

Repeat After Me (Kongos) - acrylic on acrylic paper (A3) Second painting in series of illustrating highly excellent song lyrics (literally in this case) - Repeat After Me is a beautifully constructed song comprising a ton of thought-provoking lyrics and therefore packed with images. This particular concept kept going through my head and turned out pretty much how I wanted it to, although you could pick any combination of the lines from this song and make loads of brilliant compositions....

Something New…

I lined up lots of new projects for this year and am amazed to report that not only am I sticking to the plan, but they're all going fairly well. In addition to the theme I started towards the end of last year of painting song lyrics (see previous post), I wanted to try out new things and started experimenting with acrylic flow - see my Instagram posts for pictures. I've done a couple more since these and am still altering my method each time as it's really fun to try different ways of gett...

Song Illustration – I’m Only Joking (Kongos)

I'm Only Joking - acrylic on acrylic paper (A3). Actually, I'm properly serious. This awesome song is the first in my series of lyric paintings for tracks I absolutely love. On the album 'Lunatic', this is a powerhouse performance from Kongos with an addictive drumline underlining sublime musicality and iconic soaring vocals. And some cool lyrics.
